Permanent Position as a Safety Technician in Downtown, New Orleans, LA

The Safety Technician is a position hired to assist UP’s Safety Specialist and UP’s Health & Safety Department with safety tasks, assessments, initiatives, and policies. The Critical function of the Safety Technician role is to assist UP’s H&S Department in maintaining continuous efficiency and effectiveness by performing a variety of safety tasks associated with ongoing regulatory and client safety requirements. This position will work as instructed by UP’s Safety Specialist, and reports to the Director of Health and Safety, to improve UP’s overall safety culture and initiatives.

The Safety Technician will:

• Be knowledgeable in UP’s Scope of Work (Refineries, Petrochemical facilities).
• Assist UP Account Managers and Regional Managers with New Hire Orientation and onsite/onboarding processes while collecting site specific orientation or training documentation from client or third party rendered training.
• Liaison with UP’s client safety representatives while actively communicating and addressing client safety needs.
• Facilitate and participate in UP’s monthly client site safety meetings when needed.
• Attend and participate in client safety meetings, forums, and other safety related activities when needed.
• Perform PPE assessments and maintain PPE inventory while collaborating with vendors to address UP employee needs and logistics regarding same.
• Ensure employee access to UP and Clients’ safety policies and procedures throughout assignment in collaboration with UP Account management team.
• Assist in the implementation of UP’s behavioral based safety program (ACES) and hazard recognition processes through training, collecting, and disseminating data collected from UP employees on assignment.
• Communicate and distribute weekly and monthly safety topics provided by UP and Client to increase overall safety awareness of employees on assignment.
• Continuously report on any changes associated with client safety requirements or policy changes and updates.

The Safety Technician will also:

• Assist, evaluate and edit UP’s site specific safety plans via direct communication with client safety representatives as requested.
• Update, evaluate, and communicate UP’s site specific emergency contact protocols and response procedures to employees on assignment at various client sites.
• Update, evaluate, and communicate UP’s safety training matrix, materials, and schedule needs in collaboration with Client as needed.
• Perform multiple client site safety assessments and walk-throughs to identify UP employee exposures on a regular basis and report findings.
• Perform client site safety functions as identified and necessary in furtherance of UP’s safety program.
• Portray a personal example of excellent safety, performance, mindset, and commitment.
Desired Skills: 
The ideal Safety Technician will have:

• Associate’s degree (minimum) in Occupational Health & Safety and/or related discipline.
• Minimum of 1-5 years’ experience in safety or related field preferred. Education may supplement minimum years’ experience.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong problem-solving and time management skills.
• Intermediate skills in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Good teamwork and interpersonal skills.
• Basic safety training and/or site-specific training.
• Ability to obtain and a valid TWIC card .
• Position may require some travel in LA and TX.
